Breit Aesthetics finds early solution to hyaluronidase shortage

The UK has been experiencing a shortage in hyaluronidase in recent months. Recognising there was a problem, Jazz Dhariwal of Breit Aesthetics was determined to help secure an early batch of Hyalase for his regular clinics concerned about stock levels in their emergency packs.

Many suspect the shortage in hyaluronidase stocks is down to increased use in the aesthetics sector due to a rise in the number of people practising in an unregulated market, leading to more complications with dermal fillers. There has also reportedly been an anecdotal rise in the number of people using it for elective reasons to refine the work they are doing after overfilling.

Hyaluronidases are enzymes that can depolymerise hyaluronic acid, leading to its degradation. Hyaluronidase is licensed in the UK for enhancing permeation of subcutaneous or intramuscular injections, local anaesthetics and subcutaneous infusions and to promote resorption of excess fluids and blood and is used in the NHS, however, it is estimated that more than half of its use in the UK is by the aesthetics market in dealing with dermal filler complications such as vascular compromise, despite this being an off-label use.

Recognising that there was a problem, Jazz Dhariwal, founder of Breit Aesthetics and distributer of Dermafill managed to secure an early stock of recently released product.

Dhariwal said, “Best clinical practice today often means planning ahead for patients who present complications that demand an in-clinic correctional procedure. Many practitioners rely on a stock of Hyalase for this very scenario, indeed the Aesthetic Complications Expert Group recommends it."
