Case Study: Rosacea treated safely and effectively with IPL

Published 15th Jul 2025

In this case study, Dr Alannah Neville, founder and clinical director of The Pemberley Clinic explores the safety and efficacy of IPL to treat rosacea.

Francesca came to The Pemberley Clinic in February seeking help for persistent rosacea. She presented dilated capillaries across her cheeks, nose, and chin, with flare‑ups often provoked by classic rosacea triggers such as spicy foods, alcohol, and sudden temperature changes. These symptoms had left her feeling extremely self‑conscious, relying daily on redness‑concealing products.

After a full consultation, we chose the V30 IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) system to treat her rosacea.

What is IPL and how does it work for rosacea?

IPL is a non-invasive light-based therapy that targets visible blood vessels beneath the skin’s surface. It works by delivering pulses of filtered light that penetrate the skin, coagulate vessels, and reduce inflammation, without damaging surrounding tissue.

Methodology

The V30 platform offers a range of filters, enabling us to select wavelengths specific to vascular lesions. For Francesca, this technology offered an ideal solution: it targets dilated capillaries with precision while reducing overall redness and inflammation.

We began with a patch test using both the 530 nm and 580 nm filters in single pulse mode. At her 4-week review, the 530 nm wavelength produced better results in reducing superficial vascularity.

We proceeded using the following settings: 530 nm, single pulse, 15 ms duration, at 23 J/cm².

Francesca underwent three full treatments spaced six weeks apart.

The results

Notable improvement was visible by her second session, with a significant reduction in facial redness and capillary visibility by the third. Beyond physical improvements, the treatment greatly enhanced her self-esteem.

Conclusion

IPL is an excellent option for patients with rosacea, especially those seeking a non-drug approach.
