Microwaves in Body Sculpting: A Prospective Study
The body-shaping market has recorded a multimillion-dollar growth trend in recent years due to the relentless evolution in non-invasive options for treating localised adiposities, cellulite and skin laxity. A new microwave technology has recently been developed to treat these concerns.
Microwaves are electromagnetic waves that can effectively interact with biological molecules and generate localised, controlled heat absorbed by selected biological targets, like water and fat, through a process called “dielectric heating”. The ONDA is an innovative platform with two handpieces to allow for selectively concentrating the specific microwave dielectric heating in both deep and superficial subcutaneous tissues. An effective cooling system is implemented to avoid thermal damage to the superficial skin layers during the microwave transmission.
A study conducted at the Laser Cutaneous Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Unit, Villa Donatello Clinic, Florence, Italy on a group of 12 volunteers reports that on a scale of 1-5, the patients agreed that they were satisfied with the results of the treatment and no adverse events were reported.
This study demonstrates the potentially promising role of microwaves with hypothesis that microwaves act directly on the subdermal fatty tissue, promoting adipocyte cells heating with no interest of the upward dermo-epidermal layers. As a consequence, it leads to macrophage adipolysis with reduction of the subdermal fatty tissue and reduction in circumference. The study also showed a great improvement in the patient’s skin tone and texture: Onda Bonan et al Microwaves in body sculpting A prospective study.pdf
“In very few sessions (usually 4-5), the Coolwaves™ in the ONDA system are extremely effective in reducing the localized accumulations of fat in areas like the abdomen, back, trochanter and lower limbs. And that’s not all! Coolwaves™ make it possible to treat cellulite even in the most advanced stages and skin laxity. This is a completely painless procedure, with no side effects, which is safe and comfortable for my patients, who were enthusiastic about this innovative treatment" - Dr Paolo Bonan from Deka.
