BAS to host virtual vein treatment masterclass

The British Association of Sclerotherapists (BAS) has announced a series of short CPD webinars for sclerotherapy practitioners, beginning in October.

Catering for various skill levels, each one-hour interactive webinar will explore an aspect of the art and science of treating varicose and spider veins.

The webinars are aimed at those already practising foam or microsclerotherapy – phlebologists, vascular surgeons and nurses, aesthetic practitioners and dermatologists. One CPD point will be awarded for each webinar.

“We are excited to be moving our CPD events virtual for the time being,” said BAS operations manager Hilary Furber. “The annual BAS conference each May has become the go-to CPD event for sclerotherapy practitioners, and this programme aims to fill the gap left by its enforced cancellation.

"A highly-interactive format will blend live presentations, panel debates, video demonstrations and real time exchanges through chats and polls, allowing participants to question or challenge expert speakers and contribute their own views. Registering separately for each webinar means participants can pick and choose only those most relevant to their own practices.”

 Upcoiming topics include:

  • 8 October : Varicose vein treatments in 2020: Reconciling patient and practitioner priorities

Prof Bruce Campbell, Mr Manjit Gohel and Mr Philip Coleridge Smith debate the merits and downsides of the many treatment modalities currently available for varicose veins and saphenous reflux, and consider how to reconcile patient concerns, financial considerations, and how to achieve the best possible clinical and cosmetic outcomes.

  • 12 November: Post-sclerotherapy compression: Is there a best practice consensus and how compelling is the evidence?

Passionate advocates of both sides of this hotly debated question present their views and invite participants to challenge their arguments and vote on the outcome. Speakers include vascular surgeons Miss Catharine McGuinness and Dr Torsten Willenberg (Bern, Switzerland).

  • 3 December: Techniques to reduce the risk of complications and comebacks after foam and  microsclerotherapy

Presentations of actual cases combined with panel discussions about how to minimise risks and adverse sequelae and deliver the best outcomes for patients.

  • 14 January: Do the latest imaging gadgets live up to the hype?

NIR, handheld portable ultrasound for under £2k, thermal imaging well under £500, transillumination devices and cross polarised illumination and magnification – should practitioners be investing in these? Members of the BAS board have tried them out and share their evaluations and tips.
