How deep should you micro-needle?

How deep should you micro-needle?

Micro-needling reduces acne scarring, fine lines, and wrinkles, as well as increasing collagen production and reducing pore size. It is a compatible treatment for a wide variety of patients and problems, making it a clear winner. L'Aesthetic explains why 4-in-1 treatment pens, such as the 1NEED device, provide extra versatility.

Micro-needling can be used at a range of depths between 0.25mm-2.5mm – but what depth is best? The aim is for maximum benefits, with little downtime. However, as micro-needling is fairly new to the beauty world, there is room for speculation.

One study found evidence that, while there is no significant difference after 1.5mm depth, consistent results were achieved between 0.5 to 1.5 mm. Therefore, the study concluded that 1-1.5mm needles are an optimal choice. However, a closer look at the research evealed that there were only three subjects, all Caucasian, between the ages of 62-73. The lack of diversity and sample size didn’t give us much confidence in the results.

Dr Ansar Mahmood, consultant surgeon and founder of the Academy of Regenerative Medicine does not micro-needle beyond 1mm.

"Micro-needling has evolved in both technology and techniques," said Mahmood. "Better multifunctional devices are now widely available but, at the purest level, when you analyse the science behind aesthetic results of skin rejuvenation, we now know that superficial depths are superior or equal to deeper depth treatments for results in most cases, without the additional risks of prolonged recovery and inflammation that increases possible risks that can be cumulative with repeat treatments. Less is often more.

"I currently use the Campomats 1NEED, as it provides me and my team the versatility of multiple indications being treated with one device, including micro-needling, micro-pricking, and microdermabrasion, as well as single channel targeting using a single or multi-needle option, which may be needed for certain scar improvements that we specialise in."

Other than varying depths and techniques, the effects of micro-needling can be enhanced using PRP and mesotherapy products.

PRP is a great homoeopathic option and can speed up the healing process that leaves behind rejuvenated skin. Less invasive treatments, such as mesotherapy products, give practitioners the option to handpick specific ingredients to cater to their clients' needs.

When it comes to micro-needling, preparation and aftercare are just as important as the treatment.

L'Aesthetic's full range includes a cleanser and sanitizing wipes, sterile surgical grade needles, and mesotherapy products to enhance the rejuvenating and antiaging effects of the treatment.

There is also a calming formula for immediate aftercare, allowing clients to leave feeling comfortable, and some ‘take home’ moisturiser, allowing clients can make the most of their treatment and reduce healing time.

Taking care of your clients’ needs outside of clinic time will leave your patients feeling confident, informed, and with better results!
