Dr Nilofer Farjo makes history as new president of ISHRS
Dr Nilofer Farjo has made history by being appointed as president of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).
As the society's 29th president, Dr Farjo is the first UK woman and the first woman from Europe to take on the role in its history. She is also the third ever woman and fourth doctor from Europe to take over the position.
Dr Farjo, who is a director and hair transplant surgeon at the Farjo Hair Institute, Manchester and London, was previously the ISHRS secretary and was board governor for five years.
This is not the first time she has made history in her field. She was also the first female in the world and the second doctor from Europe to edit the Hair Transplant Forum International Journal, the official publication of the ISHRS.
In 2015 in Chicago, she became the first (and so far only) British doctor to become the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) annual World Congress program chair.
"Having held several posts over 28 years, I'm delighted and honoured to take on the role of president of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery", she said. "I'm looking forward to continuing the mission of ISHRS in promoting the highest standards of medical and surgical outcomes in hair restoration through education, collegiality, research, ethics and public awareness."
Dr Farjo has had an esteemed career in hair restoration. She graduated in 1988 from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. After training in hair transplant surgery in Toronto, Canada, in 1992, she co-founded clinics in the UK exclusively practising hair restoration surgery. In 2003 she became a Diplomate of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery.
She has taken an active role in teaching and research over the past 27 years. She is a regular speaker at local and international conferences, often presiding over live surgery workshops in her clinic in Manchester.
Her publications include book chapters in leading hair transplant, plastic surgery and dermatology textbooks. She has many peer-reviewed publications through collaborations on hair biology research with six UK Universities and several private companies.
In 2021, she also won the ISHRS' Platinum Follicle Award' for contributions to hair research in 2012.
She is a founding member and past president of the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery (BAHRS), past treasurer of the European Hair Research Society (2013-2018) and Fellow of the Institute of Trichologists (UK); and Past President of The Trichological Society (UK).
