A detailed and comprehensive guide to skincare protocols, products and recommended regimens, this ultimate guide to the use of cosmeceutcials in clinical practice is a must read for aesthetic practitioners wanting to enhance the use of skincare in their practice.

ABSTRACT

The complete lack of skincare guidelines along with the plethora of “miraculous” products, promising to transform photo-damaged and ageing skin, has led me to write this manual in an effort to educate and produce some rudimentary guidance on the use of high quality cosmeceuticals, based on my experience in dealing with diverse skin problems and conditions over a number of years. Skin health is directly related to proper function of its individual cells and extracellular matrix components, appendages, vascular plexuses, innate and adaptive immune mechanisms. Any disturbance in any of these structures is reflected on the skin’s surface, altering the appearance of the outer covering of our body and, consequently, the way we look and are perceived by others. Disease, genetics, sun exposure, smoking, hormones, medications, diet, improper use of topical skin products, or neglect can all precipitate or accelerate skin’s natural process of ageing. Dr Zein Obagi believes that the success of any treatment is dependent upon regulating, stimulating and restoring proper cellular function. I would add that the right skincare regimen should address the causes of cutaneous aging and enhance skin’s natural defence mechanisms. Our skin, as the largest organ and the outer covering of our body, is overexposed to environmental damage, in particular photodamage, leading to extrinsic ageing. In addition, intrinsic ageing, or chronological ageing, due to inherent degenerative process is also attacking our skin from within. Intrinsic and extrinsic cutaneous ageing is a relentless process that cannot be halted or reversed, however, extensive research has shown that high quality cosmeceuticals (i.e. the marriage of pharmaceutical preparations and cosmetics) can provide significant antiageing benefits through their protective, corrective and, to some extent, preventive action. Cosmeceuticals can be used by both men and women and can effectively treat or improve a variety of skin conditions ranging from acne and rosacea to pigment disorders and cellulite.
