BAHRS partners with CQC to create inspection guide to promote safety for hair restoration
The British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery (BAHRS) has partnered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to create an inspection guide to promote safety for patients undergoing hair restoration surgery. The aim is to aid CQC advisors in making correct assessments when inspecting clinics that do hair restoration surgery. BAHRS believes there’s been an increase in unethical advertising in the sector and will be working with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to ensure marketers of hair transplant surgery comply with regulations.
Any clinic offering Hair Transplants or Prosthetic Hair Fibre Implants must be registered with the CQC. The BAHRS will also be working with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to ensure marketers of Hair Transplant Surgery comply with regulations.
The BAHRS offers guidance to patients on its website www.bahrs.co.uk on how to choose a hair transplant surgeon or clinic. Patients should beware of marketing websites that do not explicitly list the doctors who do the surgery, along with a description of their qualifications and experience.
All medical doctors who perform Hair Transplant Surgery should consider joining BAHRS which ensures that members comply with its Professional Standards and aims to reduce the unethical practice that currently exists in the industry.
The Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) is the newly constituted ‘self-regulating’ body for nonsurgical cosmetic procedures and hair restoration surgery (HRS). HRS is one of the modalities for which standards for both training and practice are being set by CPSA.
Following the formation of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) in 1993, the BAHRS was founded in 1996 by twelve like-minded doctors practicing hair transplant surgery in the UK who wanted to create a similar, but local, organisation. Some of the objectives were:
- To promote the understanding and reputation of hair restoration surgery in the United Kingdom.
- To foster the communication of information relating to hair restoration surgery amongst members, other practitioners and other professional bodies.
- To advance all aspects of the professional practice of hair restoration surgery to high standards of competence, conduct and ethics, and to promote education in appropriate skills.
- To represent members, to assist members to protect their interests, and to offer members support in matters relating to hair restoration surgery practice.
