Botulinum toxin tops global procedures poll
Botulinum toxin injections are the number-one treatment performed around the globe, according to new statistics released by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).
The association, which has more than 2,700 board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeon members in 95 countries, released the data to coincide with its 22nd Biennial Congress, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this month. It showed that more than 23 million cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures were performed worldwide in 2013, more than 5,145,189 of which were botulinum toxin injections. The United States once again topped the list of countries where the most procedures were performed (3,996,631 – 17%).
This was followed by Brazil (2,141,257 – 9.1%); Mexico (884,353 – 3.8%); Germany (654,115 – 2.8%) and Spain (447,177 – 1.9%). The top five cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2013 were breast augmentation, liposuction, blepharoplasty, lipostructure, including lipofilling and stemenhanced lipofilling, and rhinoplasty. After botulinum toxin, the leading non-surgical procedures performed were fillers, laser hair removal, non-invasive facial rejuvenation and chemical peels, CO2 resurfacing and dermabrasion. Women had more than 20 million cosmetic procedures (87.2% of the total). Men had more than three million cosmetic procedures. (12.8% of the total).
