Can antihistamine treatment improve hair regrowth?

A retrospective cohort study has explored the efficacy of antihistamines in combination with topical corticosteroid and superficial cryotherapy for the treatment of alopecia areata.

Published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the study took data from 148 patients with AA who were treated with topical corticosteroid (TC) and superficial cryotherapy (SC) from February 2012 to November 2018.

The study showed that the treatment did improve the rate of major hair growth with no known adverse events, although the authors stated that further research was warranted.

After approximately seven months of treatment, 100% of those treated with an antihistamine exhibited major hair regrowth, and 79.3% of patients who were not treated with antihistamines had major hair regrowth (P =.045).
