Consensus Group investigates Aesthetic Interventional Induced Visual Loss (AIIVL)

Blindness concept - erasing drawing of eye A group of national and international experts has been looking at the issue of Aesthetic Interventional Induced Visual Loss (AIIVL) in order to develop guidelines and management pathways for practitioners for this rare but lifechanging complication.

The group included consultant plastic surgeon Mr Dalvi Humzah, consultant ophthalmic surgeons Mr Ramon Malhotra and Mr Saj Ataullah, chief orbital and ophthalmic surgeon Dr Robert Goldberg and plastic surgeon Dr Andy Chiang. Looking through the available literature and experimental work the AIIVL Consensus Group produced a suggested management pathway for patients who may have this complication.

Mr Dalvi Humzah, consultant plastic surgeon and director of DH Aesthetic Training, said, “It has been a great pleasure to work with my colleagues on this area of aesthetics. We are hoping to make this consensus management document freely available to all practitioners and hope this will be used and developed further to treat any patient who has this event. “The suggested guideline covers general advice as well as specific interventions to help both the practitioner and patients. We will continue to review the current literature and cases in order to develop our recommendations.”
