Despite the rising cost of weight-loss medications, there is a growing number of Brits feeling negatively about their weight. A recent study found that 43% of respondents felt more pressure to lose weight than they did two years ago.
The survey, commissioned by GP Nutrition and conducted among 2,004 respondents across the UK in September, reveals that external pressures are encouraging more people to opt for quick weight loss fixes.
31% believe that changing body trends have influenced the pressure to lose weight. Almost a quarter (23%) of respondents report that fashion/beauty standards evoke negative emotions about their weight, alongside social media (20%) and celebrities/influencers (18%).
Over the recent years, weight loss injections have grown in popularity as a quick method to lose weight. 1 in 5 patients who have tried or considered trying weight loss injections did so to lose weight quickly. However, whilst 20% say they have done so under medical advice, 11% admit they felt they had no other option.
All medications should be authorised by a trained professional, and patients on weight loss medication should be closely monitored. Worryingly, 41% revealed they had sourced injections online independently without a prescription, and 35% say they have obtained them through a friend or family member.
Despite this, 31% said they would be worried about the side effects of the jabs, and 28% would prefer a more natural approach to weight loss, such as dietary fibre-based supplements designed to support metabolism, digestion, and satiety.
Patients can consider alternatives such as “lifestyle interventions, nutritionally tailored diets, physical activity plans, behavioural therapy, and sleep optimisation remain foundational,” suggests Dr Mayoni Gooneratne, founder and CEO of Human Health.
“Other approved weight loss medications may be used if accessible and safe. In some cases, clinically supervised devices, endoscopic procedures, or bariatric surgery may be appropriate.
“Patients can also try a holistic approach; supporting gut health, hormonal balance, and metabolic optimisation.”
