Lou Sommereux launches filler complications course
Aesthetic nurse and independent nurse prescriber Lou Sommereux has announced that she will be running monthly training courses for fellow nurses from her practice, Cosmex Clinic in Cambridge.
The Lou Sommereux Training Courses, which will begin on February 15, will focus on managing dermal filler complications and, in particular, the use of Hyalase, which she feels there is still a lot of fear and confusion around amongst aesthetic practitioners. She said, “There is still quite a lot of anxiety surrounding the management of dermal filler complications and particularly around the use of Hyalase. This can be a very effective tool when managing complications from HA fillers but you have to be confident and competent and know what you are doing. I have found that different fillers require different dilutions because of their different viscosities.”
Delegates who attend the one-day training will be given guidelines to follow around the use of Hyalase to help make them more confident and will be able to practice injecting using dermal fillers and Hyalase, which will centre around the ACE (Aesthetic Complications Expert) guidelines. This will include guidance on the calculations surrounding the drug and how much to administer with different fillers.
The courses will cover anatomy and physiology of the face, how to avoid and prevent complications as well as what to do if things do go wrong. The course will also discuss the importance of identifying "red flag patients" and when to say no and explain how to recognise and manage both minor and major complications.
Practitioners will be assessed throughout the day via worksheets and Q and As and given post-course work that will need to be submitted for a certificate of merit and attendance. Mentoring, peer support and peer learning will also be an important factor. All will leave with management guidelines and an emergency grab bag for their practice.
Sommereux, who was passionate about ensuring she delivered comprehensive education-based training, undertook a foundation teacher training qualification and will be studying for a diploma in clinical education later this year. She is also part of the ACE network group
She said, “Doing my teaching qualification has made me look at training in a different way. It is not the same as getting up and giving a lecture at a conference. It is about identified learning and quantifying the knowledge practitioners have learnt and I think that’s what makes this course unique.”
