Surgeon launches on-site integrated patient psychological support
Cosmetic surgeon Paul Banwell will now be providing on-site psychological services in his private cosmetic clinic, The Banwell Clinic, based at The McIndoe Hospital, Sussex. The partnership, with consulting psychologist and psychotherapist Gaylin Tudhope for the first time ever in the UK, will offer patients pre and post-op psychological support during their cosmetic surgery journey within the same clinic setting.
The partnership is an innovative, advanced response to last year’s independent review of cosmetic surgery by NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh, which recommended better regulation, training and professional support in the cosmetic surgery industry to benefit those patients undergoing cosmetic procedures. The new offering, which is also in line with the Royal College of Surgeons guidelines, include a rigorous assessment for patients with pre-procedure discussions including the disclosure of all relevant history, such as eating disorders, as well as the documenting of signs and symptoms of Body Dysmorphic Disorder.
The psychological factors contributing to the motivation to undergo the procedure and expectations of outcome are also assessed.
Mr Banwell commented, “We always strive to offer our patients first class medical and nursing care but now, not only can we offer first class psychological support, it is actually provided in our own clinic surroundings. We have wholeheartedly supported many of the recent Keogh recommendations and we are delighted that Gaylin has joined our team.”
Tudhope added, “Our aim is to offer well-founded professional advice and counsel, ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care suited to their needs and correctly address their reasons for change.”
