Surgeons raise concerns over Superdrug injectable services

The Royal College of Surgeons (RCA) and the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) have raised concerns over high street  health and beauty retailer Superdrug offering in-store injectable treatments.

The Skin Renew Service is in partnership with Botox and Juvéderm dermal filler manufacturer Allergan. Treatment will only be available to those aged 25 and over, the store says.

However, the Royal College of Surgeons and the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) have written to the CEO of Superdrug owner, AS Watson, to express concern at the company's decision to offer these services.

The RCS and BAPRAS say that “undergoing any kind of cosmetic procedure carries risks and it is not a decision which should ever be taken lightly.” They also said that  they were worried about these procedures becoming “impulse buys for Superdrug shoppers”, with customers having them without undergoing a proper consultation with a trained health professional, and not having time to fully reflect on the pros and cons of such treatments, which may cause permanent disfigurement.

Superdrug claimed it received feedback from nearly 10,000 customers who said they would welcome a service of this kind. They said that injectables will be administered by nurses trained “to the highest standards”, according to the company, after 53% of customers surveyed said reassurance as to the practitioner’s level of training was the most important factor.

Skin Renew consultations can only be booked via a phone call with a dedicated customer service team trained to answer common questions and help people decide if a consultation is right for them.

A qualified nurse then undertakes consultation, which involves the patient filling out a medical questionnaire. This is assessed by an aesthetic nurse who ultimately decides if the treatment is clinically and professionally appropriate.

The Skin Renew Service launched at Superdrug’s branch on The Strand, London, with a view to roll out more across the UK.
