AlumierMD launches Summer Success protocol to aid sun safety education

The leading aesthetic skincare brand AlumierMD has launched its new Summer Success protocol, to help professionals educate their patients about sun safety.

It comes after new research suggested poor patient habits and fewer in-clinic enquiries could be detrimental to both client results and practitioners’ bottom line during the summer.

To gain insight into the biggest challenges that aesthetic clinics faced during the summer months, AlumierMD surveyed professionals from their global community of over 3,500 clinics and 6,000 professionals.

The insights revealed that 21.6% of clinic professionals faced increased contraindications due to sun-related skin damage, and 12.6% encountered a rise in skin conditions that are more stubborn to treat due to sunlight or heat.

Simultaneously, clinics saw a drop in appointments, with 17.1% of those surveyed seeing reduced booking availability for patients due to staff holidays; 15.3% had fewer enquiries in general, and 10.8% saw fewer treatment bookings.

Concerningly, AlumierMD’s research also suggested that patients continue to partake in detrimental skincare behaviour. Reportedly, 22.9% of patients don’t reapply sunscreen throughout the day, and 14.4% don’t wear sunscreen at all in the summer.

Sun-related myths have not been eradicated either, with 11.9% of patients thinking that the sun clears up blemishes, 10.2% avoiding high-factor creams because they assume they won’t tan, and 7.6% of patients sunbathing while wearing makeup. Likewise, 28.7% of respondents agreed their patients like having a tan.

“These insights are concerning in light of research that suggests an estimated 90% of skin ageing is caused by the sun”, says AlumierMD’s communications manager, Victoria Hiscock. “Experts suggest that only 31% of people wear sunscreen year-round, while 10% don’t wear sunscreen at all."

AlumierMD’s new Summer Success protocol, born out of this research, is designed to help skincare professionals educate patients about sun safety.

Featuring bespoke content to help bust the myth of the ‘healthy tan’, the idea is to inspire patients to continue with a tailored summer skincare routine, in combination with in-clinic treatments, to maintain their results year-round.

Below are six ways AlumierMD suggests practitioners can encourage their patients to take up summer skin protocols:

  1. See who has an in-clinic treatment booked and educate them on the power of preparing the skin and getting results before they step foot in the clinic door.
  2. Look in your AlumierMD report section and see who is about to run out of sunscreen or any other summer-related products and educate them on upgrading to one of the Prep and Enhance collections.
  3. Invite all your active patients for a seasonal skincare review and update their Prescription Pad with the relevant summer stack.
  4. Contact your patients who are currently using AlumierMD Retinol Resurfacing Serum and ask them if they would like advice on how to maintain use during the summer months. For example, through a lower dose or ‘retinol sandwiching’.
  5. Contact your patients who haven’t had a treatment in 3 months and talk to them about the importance of Summer Protocols.
  6. Update the Prescription Pad of all your top clients with their relevant summer stack and write in the notes section to say you’ve made some suggestions for them.
