BTL adds Emsella to its portfolio

Last month saw the launch of BTL Emsella, a new device for urinary incontinence.

The FDA-approved device relies on high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology. The high-intensity focused electromagnetic fields are generated by a coil positioned inside a chair applicator. High-intensity focused electromagnetic fields interact and depolarise the pelvic floor moto neurons. Fields deliver focused electromagnetic energy into whole pelvic floor area, which results in selective and supramaximal pelvic floor muscle contractions.

This HIFEM technology triggers intense pelvic floor muscle contractions by targeting the neuromuscular tissue and inducing electric currents. These electric currents then result in contractions which stimulate the entire pelvic floor area. The HIFEM passes non-invasively through pelvic floor area. Therefore, it represents a non-invasive solution for patients, who remain fully clothed during the therapy.

These contractions are independent of brain function and therefore result in thousands of supramaximal pelvic floor muscle contractions, meaning that 100% of the muscle is being used – rather than 40%. Just one 28-minute session will cause 11,200 contractions, the equivalent of performing 11,200 (correctly done) Kegel exercises.

Clinical studies have determined that 95% of treated clients described a notable improvement in their quality of life. The procedure is gentle, non-invasive and completely safe.

Intimate You clinic in Liverpool is the first clinic in the UK to offer the treatment. They’ve already seen a 100% response rate in patients. Dr Tracey Sims comments, “At last we have a breakthrough in incontinence treatment that is highly effective, non-invasive and welcomed by women who love the fact that it is painless and carried out fully clothed.

“One of our patients wanted to go to visit her daughter in America but felt embarrassed by frequent toilet trips on the plane. She underwent a course of BTL Emsella treatment and now as I write this she is in America having told me, ‘I no longer feel as if my life revolves around finding a toilet’.

“Now we have the opportunity to genuinely improve the daily lives of many women with a treatment that is up to 95% effective and is easy, painless, shows rapid results and helps women to get back to running, jumping, aerobics classes, sneezing and laughing without worrying about urine leakage."
