Cellulite specialist comments on Kim Kardashian's new shape wear

Kim Kardashian’s new shape wear claims to be a Brazilian bum lift and cellulite removal without treatments and surgery. Cellulite specialist Georgios Tzenichristos of the LipoTherapeia clinic gives his views.

"After years of denial, and after the paparazzi photos in Mexico, Kim Kardashian came to accept the existence of her cellulite and, with her latest Skims range, to both cover it and, in typical Kardashian fashion, make money out of it. With the same range Kim has also found yet another way to monetise her glorious curves by offering her fans a virtual Brazilian Butt Lift without surgery, albeit only under clothing.

Kim complained that she is 'insecure about the cellulite on her thighs showing through her clothes', so she created extra 'bonding' in her Skims.

Kim Kardashian is an example of someone taking a pesky problem and doing something about it. In typical American fashion, she is making money out of her cellulite. Why not? This is great. She solved a problem for herself, making money out of it and helping millions of women in the process. What’s not to like about this attitude?

In fact, Kim is not just making money out of her cellulite. Kim is largely credited for making big bottoms fashionable again and she is the main driving force behind the rise of Brazilian butt lift procedures. Women no more want small bums, they want to make their bums big, round and lifted, like Kim’s.

Now those women who want to look like her do not need to go under the knife for a dangerous but lift operation, they can just buy Kim’s new super-reinforced version of SpanxThere is a sheerness on the butt to lift it all, and there is a silicone strap. The Contour Bonded collection offers the highest level of support for super strength smoothing and lifting.

And there you have it: a combined Brazilian Butt Lift and cellulite removal all in one (albeit only under the clothes), without any treatments or surgery, yours for $98.

Sounds perfect. But is it?

Cellulite doesn’t kill and one can live a happy, fulfilled life with it or without it. However, it is indeed an inflammatory aesthetic skin condition and besides the skin health implications some women do not like its look, so for them it is worth doing something about it: either treat it or hide it.

Kim’s new Skims range aims to hide her cellulite with extreme compression. But constant extreme compression may not be a good idea.

For occasional use, on a night out, for example, compression garments are great: they instantly ‘Photoshop’ your tummy, bottom and legs, hiding not just cellulite but also any other bulging or sagging fat on those areas.

However, continuous extreme compression is not a good idea, as it will impede blood circulation and may lead to hypoxia and subsequently more cellulite in the long run. Furthermore, by isolating collagen cells from body vibration, it will gradually lead to looser skin. Collagen cells need mechanical stimulation to stay fit, and anything that impedes it, such as extreme compression, also impedes fibroblast function.

Compression wear is especially practical in the winter but really impractical and uncomfortable in the heat of the summer. Probably this is a reason why Kim chose to release her new line now, in October, just before winter. A summer launch would not make any sense.

So all in all, Skims seems like a genius, kill-two-birds-with-one-stroke idea from KK, and looks set to further boost her $370 million fortune (Skims has made $2 million in the first two minutes of the site going live)."
