Surgeon accused of molesting patient

An acclaimed plastic surgeon allegedly molested a patient after dimming the lights and asking her to dance to a Julio Iglesias song, a medical tribunal has heard.

Mr Mohammad Ali Jawad, 56, reportedly produced crystal shot glasses and drank vodka with the woman at his surgery as she sought advice for facial scars. He lifted her off a chair, massaged her neck and touched the tops of her breasts, it is claimed, and asked: “Do you see me as a man or a surgeon?” The former personal assistant in her 30s, known as “Patient A”, claimed Mr Jawad called and asked her out for a drink after the three-hour consultation at his Marylebone surgery in October 2012.

Mr Jawad won international acclaim after he restored the face of model Katie Piper, 31, who suffered horrific burns in an acid attack in 2008. He is a trustee of a burns charity founded by Miss Piper who is now a television presenter.

At a fitness to practice hearing of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service in Manchester, Patient A said she took a bottle of vodka from her native Poland as a gift to the meeting. Mr Jawad opened it and brought out glasses, she said. “I felt pressurised to drink with him. I thought it was weird but could not foresee what would happen next.” Mr Jawad, who denies the allegations, is expected to give evidence via video link from Pakistan where he is currently working.
