What do patients really worry about before cosmetic surgery?

New research reveals that recovery time and results are amongst the top concerns for patients considering cosmetic surgery, whereas safety and pain ranked a lot lower.

The research from Aesthetic’s software company Adoreal, has revealed the anxieties that patients bring into the consultation room before committing to a procedure - and the results may surprise you.

What did the research find?

Recovery time was the most common response, with 28% of patients admitting that this was their main concern. This reflects the increasing demand for procedures that minimise disruption to daily life.

The second most common concern was worrying about achieving desired results, with 20.9% of respondents admitting that this was a concern, whilst surprisingly only 17.5% shared concerns around pain or discomfort, and just 10.2% responded with anxieties around the safety of the surgery.

“It’s vital to remember that while we as surgeons perform these procedures routinely, for our patients, it can be life-changing. Recovery time, pain, and safety are not just clinical considerations; they are the very real anxieties people bring into the consultation room. This is why open, transparent conversations are crucial. Reassurance and education are equally as important as the surgical technique itself,” shared Paul Banwell, consultant plastic surgeon and founder of Pantheons Clinic.

“These concerns are a healthy sign of an informed patient community. Patients today research thoroughly and ask the right questions. As surgeons, it’s our responsibility to guide them through the process with clarity and compassion. Addressing these anxieties head-on is what builds confidence and ultimately leads to better patient experiences,” added Adrian Richards, consultant plastic surgeon and founder of iQonic Aesthetics.
