US searches for 'plastic surgery' surged 72% after Met Gala
A new Google Trends search analysis revealed that searches for 'plastic surgery' soared by 72% across the US, less than 24 hours after the Met Gala 2024 on the May 6.
The analysis, conducted by personal health consultants TruMe Labs, was determined through Google Trends, using the search terms ‘plastic surgery’ and ‘mommy makeover’. The research established the US average search rate over the previous thirty days, and compared percentage increases at peak rates, to show the influence of the Met Gala.
The results found that interest in plastic surgery skyrocketed to its highest point in a month as a result of celebrities taking to the Met Gala carpet on Monday night.
Similarly, searches for 'mommy makeovers’ increased by 43% - with the ‘mommy makeover’ being a combination of procedures that revitalize the female physique.
Worldwide, the terms have seen a slight increase, particularly ‘mommy makeover’ seeing a slight peak on May 6.
In the UK, ‘plastic surgery’ and ‘mummy makeover’ haven’t seen a particular increase in searches since the Gala, with interest staying much the same.
A spokesperson for TruMe Labs commented on the findings:
"The MET Gala is a celebration of fashion, but it's important to remember the behind-the-scenes work and time these celebrities invest. Their flawless looks are the product of months of preparation, so comparing ourselves to these A-listers can quickly become incredibly disheartening.
Many will seek various ways of looking more youthful and anti-ageing techniques and there are many ways you can achieve a similar look to your favourite celebrity without turning to cosmetic surgery.”
