Overfilled lips are taking a backseat, with naturally hydrated, plump lips stepping into the spotlight with minimal carefully placed injectables and regenerative treatments, such as injectable skin boosters, becoming the latest trend in lip plumping.
“Patients can plump lips and give that boost with the use of injectable skin boosters as an alternative to filler, which are still hyaluronic acid-based, but are stimulating collagen and elastin production, renewing the cells, and hydrating beautifully,” explains plastic surgeon Dr Ash Soni.
As patients favour more natural enhancements and regenerative procedures, skin boosters offer an alternative to hydrate and improve skin quality with hyaluronic acid, focusing on skin health rather than adding volume or changing facial structure. By increasing moisture within the lip tissue, skin boosters make the lips appear fuller.
The importance of lip care
The topical lip care market is rapidly growing. Not everyone wants or can afford to have injectable treatments, so many look to skin care and, more increasingly, lip plumping balms, oils and glosses to achieve a fuller, more hydrated look.
“Lips themselves are thinner and have a lack of oil glands, so they are much more susceptible to drying out. During certain times of year, especially now as we enter winter, going from cold to heat will dry out the lips and skin as well. If our lips are dry, then often we will lick them, but what that does is actually make them more dry. Some also pick their lips, which will remove the superficial layer of skin, thus disrupting the lip barrier, making them even more sensitive,” explains Dr Soni.
“We have to focus on protecting against environmental stressors and damage from UV exposure. We also want to make sure that we are also protecting the lip barrier and maintaining optimal levels of hydration. Within products, we should focus on ingredients that stimulate collagen and elastin production, as the degradation of collagen and elastin will also result in poor structural support for the lips, resulting in an aged appearance.
“Lips have less natural protection from UV and environmental damage, which leads to a degeneration of elastin and collagen. This leads to thin, dry, rough, and sensitive lips that also display an increase of vertical lines.”
This is where skin boosters provide a solution to damaged and dry lips. The injectables deliver internal hydration and improve the quality of the lip tissue, providing long term solutions in comparison to topical balms.
“Skincare is obviously amazing too, and we now have AlumierMD LipBoost in order to help plump,” adds Dr Soni.
“Lip products like this with hyaluronic acid as the main ingredient help plump the lips naturally. Thyme extract, antioxidants, avocado oil, squalene, and peptides, also help hydrate, improve the lip quality, plump the lips naturally, and protect,” continues Dr Soni.

LipBoost, is a peptide lip emulsion that combines peptide technology with restorative hydration, combining Cellfie and Hyaluronic Acid Filling Spheres to deliver an instant plumping effect that smooths and hydrates from the first application. Assisting with recovery, LipBoost strengthens the barrier after injectables to improve dryness, smoothness, and sensitivity.
Subtle enhancements
“The industry has moved away from the overfilled appearance, and one of the biggest reasons why there is stigma attached to filler treatment is mostly because of the way that some providers have been injecting lips over the years in rather unnatural ways, with poor techniques being used,” explains Dr Soni
Whilst skin boosters subtly plump the lips, lip filler adds volume and contour, offering a more noticeable plumping appearance. But if your patient wants to avoid needles altogether, prescribing a great HA topical product will help improve the appearance of the lips naturally.
“The key as a provider is to firstly understand the anatomy inside out, and to use a very delicate filler to softly and subtly increase the volume and improve asymmetry. The trend has now moved much more towards the subtle enhancements as we enter this undetectable era.
“To have ways in which we can complement procedures with the best skincare has also become increasingly important.”
