Comments from experts about the TikTok trend that can’t be done if you have lip-filler.
As spooky season approaches, and the Warner Bros. promote the new film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the makeup side of TikTok has become obsessed with a lipstick trend that doesn’t work for everybody, it turns out.
Beetlejuice lips and the backlash of lies
As #beetlejuicelips hits the top trends, so did the number of influencers who get exposed when the technique did not work for them. Among these were influencers with large followings, who may not have been entirely transparent about the real reasons behind their lip appearance.
Credit for the creator of this new trend goes to Luara Reisinger, a popular TikTok and Instagram makeup artist and influencer. The technique is straightforward; start by applying a bold lip gloss, preferably in bright purple or green, though any vibrant colour will do. Next, tightly purse your lips to create lines, and while they’re scrunched up, gently dust them with black eyeshadow or another dark powder.
When you smile, your lips should appear striped to some degree, depending on how much powder you used and how well your lips creased when pursed. A light touch is key, but not everyone can achieve the desired effect, no matter how carefully they try.
According to Dr Jasmin Taher, founder and lead practitioner at Visage Clinic, those who have struggled with the Beetlejuice lip trend due to lip fillers, suggests that their lips are overfilled. “Lip fillers, when done excessively, can smooth out the natural lines on your lips, lines that are a unique and integral part of your anatomy, much like fingerprints. These lip lines, known as lip prints, are part of what gives lips their natural texture and allow normal expression. Overfilling stretches the lips, eliminating these lines, and often results in an unnatural appearance.”
However, Dr Taher reassures us that it is still possible to have lip filler while maintaining your natural lip lines. “The key is moderation. If you're finding it difficult to achieve this trend, it might be worth considering dissolving your current filler and opting for a more conservative approach. This will help you achieve fuller lips that still retain their natural look and allow you to successfully participate in trends like this one.”
Dr Vincent Wong, from Vindoc Aesthetics, offers an interesting approach in commenting on this trend, saying that within aesthetics, “we try to prevent or eliminate these creases with hyaluronic acid injections, so it is interesting to see that lip creases, which are often deemed as an ‘imperfection’ by many, is now an acceptable beauty trend.”
Whilst it may be true to an extent that the trend doesn’t work on those with enhanced lip, Dr Wong emphasisies that it is also important to consider that there may be other, natural factors that get in the way of achieving the spooky stripes, including muscle activity and skin thickness. “Naturally, some individuals are less able to create these creases compared to others, even without the help of hyaluronic acid injections. Some people might feel exposed if a trend shows the difference between naturally fuller lips and those enhanced with fillers. It’s essential to remember that beauty is subjective, and individuals should choose what makes them feel comfortable and confident. Ultimately, trends should celebrate individual styles and preferences rather than create division. Embracing diversity in lip shapes and fullness can lead to a more inclusive beauty conversation!”
Therefore, it doesn’t mean that everyone who can’t make the Beetlejuice lips trick work has gotten lip filler. Some people’s lips may be naturally resistant to lining or they might just be doing it wrong. Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, from the Aesthetics Doctor, reinforces this opinion as he states that “not everyone that has lip filler will have this look as it only happens when a person has had too much dermal filler injected and therefore stretching the skin of the lips. By stretching the skin, the appearance over fine lines is greatly reduced.”
Another reason may be hydration status. “If a person is overly hydrated or at points in the day when hydration levels are higher, such as the morning, this can make the lips appear a lot more plumped and reduce the fine lines and wrinkles that naturally appear around the mouth. On the flip side, when you are more dehydrated, fine lines and winkles are more visible around the mouth, which makes it easier to achieve this specific trend.”
So, listen to the experts and don’t rush to judge, however, it would be wise to maintain a healthy scepticism toward anyone trying too hard to sell you something.
